Just a few quick questions !!!

I want to learn more about linux (was going for red hat) and was pondering if any of you know a really down to earth manual that will guide me step by step so i can finally enjoy a working linux installaion???

Oh course i want to use SHOWEQ, but first i want to learn about linux, all those words i hear ppl talking about i dont understand, heck i dont even know how to install a program under linux !!

Have you even looked at *gasp* the manual found at http://www.redhat.com ?

Second, no i havnt read the manual, since i havnt found out what version of linux i should start up with (hence i dont have the cd, hence i cant read the manual).

But i can tell for your post that you think that red hat would be a good linux distribution to start up with??? read: easist?

The manuals are all online. You do not need the CD to read the documentation (it's not like Windows where you are discouraged to use their website and encouraged go "buy" manuals and/or professional help). Just goto the RedHat website, click documentation and go read them =) This applies to most distro's that exist.

RedHat 7.2 should be the best for you, since there's a "step-by-step" walkthrough for ShowEQ on a Red Hat 7.2 clean install included in the ShowEQ download (the INSTALL.newbies (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/seq/showeq/INSTALL.newbies?rev=1.3&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup) file)

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you are really better off asking Linux questions on Linux forums rather than here. Though many of us are pretty Linux savvy, this just isn't the place to ask about Linux unless it relates to Seq. There are much better sites out there for that, starting with the site for whichever distro you choose. Like Mr. S. stated, Linux documetation is abundant and you can often find your answer by google searching for "<something> HOWTO".

Good luck in your learning, and I hope you enjoy it.

just another opinion ....

While there is tons of docs and information available, if you have zero experience with linux you may want to find a local user group (see local community college) and have someone show you some basics. If you've been raised on windows ..it's going to be a dramatic step. Personally I don't mind reading manuals, but comming into linux cold was a little rough.

If you're looking for the easiest Linux distribution then you should consider Mandrake (http://www.mandrakelinux.com). Most reviews that I have read indicate that Mandrake is easier for a Linux n00b than RedHat -- I personally concur with that assessment.

If you want the easiest SEQ installation, then I guess RedHat might serve you better.

Once you get Linux up & running and learn how to find and install packages using the rpm command, then find the SEQ Guides posted in this board and go through it step-by-step. You will get flamed hard if you ask questions that are clearly answered in the guides.
