View Full Version : Cannot get ShowEQ working

I have DSL hooked to a Linksys router> to the uplink on a Linksys 8 port 10/100 hub.
I am not getting packets to the ShowEQ box so I made sure that the hub showed that both the Linux and ShowEQ box are operating at 100. Still nothing...
I installed tcpdump on the linux box to see if I was even seeing the packets in the first place. When I do a tcpdump -1 eth0 | grep 192.168.1.2 (my eq box) I see not a damn thing. wtf?
This is a hub and they are both at 100. I just read somewhere that hooking a 10t device to the hub will turn it into a REAL hub at 100t? This is the only thing I have not done.
Any suggestions would be appreiciated.

Read the FAQ, this is only the most common question asked on these boards.

ok, I read it again...
are you refering to this?
99.9% of the time those Residential Gateway/Routers made by LinkSys, Dlink, etc... with X number of ports are switches. This means you will have to plug all your computers into a real hub, then uplink that hub to your router/gateway.
Another recent "feature" of many current hubs is that in a most situations, they will behave as switches. This sucks, but can be worked around. Typically, the 10mbit and the 100mbit section of a 10/100 hub are switched. So if EQ is 100mbit and SEQ is 10mbit, they won't see each other's traffic. Also, if a 10mbit device is hooked to the 10/100 hub it will frequently become a REAL hub on the 100mbit section. So, if your router is 10mbit and your SEQ and EQ boxes are 100mbit all hooked to the same hub-switch, you should probably be able to sniff packets! This is true for most LinkSys hubs, and some Netgear and Bay Network hubs.
The only thing I have not done is throw a 10baseT box on the hub to make it a REAL hub on the 100 side.
Or this...
4.18 - Everything is setup perfectly. I have a hub and a PPPoE DSL modem, but ShowEQ does not work. What is wrong?
PPPoE is what most DSL providers use for their authentication. If you know anything about it, you also know that it modifies packets by encapulating them. This makes PPPoE EverQuest packets totally different from normal looking EverQuest packets. There are two solutions to this:
Rewrite SEQ so that it can detect EverQuest packets inside PPPoE packets. If you do this, please submit a patch to CVS.
Get a device which translates PPPoE into normal Ethernet. This may sound like a rare device that you have never heard of, but it isn't. It is just a resedential gateway/router like the ones from LinkSys, Dlink or 3com (or who ever else). You can also use a linux computer which is using PPPoE software on the DSL interface and normal ethernet on the internal network. Just be sure to keep that hub too.
I have a linksys hub that is translating the PPPoE packets to ethernet already.

I think you answered your own question... so instead of posting the exact same question that was in the FAQ, why dont you just do what it says to do there? Hoping maybe there was an easier solution that we only give out to people who post repeated questions?

yes, he means that. if you can find something that runs at 10mbit and just plug it into the hub, it will be fixed.

That did not work. but thanks for all the great advice high_jeeves. Dont know why you even bother posting

does the light on the hub indicate 10mbit?
i have a 5port and 8port 10/100 linksys hub, and that "trick" works fine BUT it is really a 10mbit ONLY network card hooked up to it. make SURE the hub thinks its 10mbit. maybe windows setting the nic to 10mbit doesn't work, as windows probably isn't retarded and tries to get the fastest speed possible.
got any 10mbit cards laying around?

Yes the light indicates 10mbit... I originaly plugged it into the pcmcia nic that is only 10T (that system is a notebook in an docking station). When that did not work I tried to plug it into the nic in the docking station and set the speed in windows itself. Both times the hub indicated 10mbit on that port.
Then I tried to change the eq box from 100Full to 100half..

yeah, no biggie. hubs are cheap. Any that you can recommend that you can pick up and CompUSA or Best Buy? I am reading that many of the newer hubs are swiches.
Thanks

I did a search for you, there are 57 threads that deal with hubs. Sounds like a Dlink, Netgear, SMC and some others may work fine. CompUSA carries them all - I can personally say the Netgear works just fine.

no suggestions here, i just have two of those damn linksys hubs... but they work for me due to my (lucky) network layout :)

Netgear EN104-TP and D-Link DSH-5 both work for me. The Netgear is a 10 Mbit only, and the D-Link is 10/100. Both are true hubs.
I bought the Netgear at Best Buy for about 25 USD and I bought the D-Link online for about 30 USD.

Just came back from CompUSA and the DS104 is in the car. Will swap out the Linksys when I get home from work. Will let you all know if it works tonight.

The Netgear DS104 is the 10/100 version of the hub mentioned above. I'm using a DS108 which is the same as the DS104 except it has 8 ports instead of 4, and it works fine. I have only 100mb connections on the hub and it still acts like a true hub.
It costs a few dollars more than the 10mbit only version, but it may be more useful to you down the road if you need to extend the number of ports on your router. It won't matter for your Internet connection, as that's 10mbit or less, but if you are doing file sharing between your PCs and have them both connected to the hub you will definately notice the speed difference between 10 and 100.

Now that's funny! You posted that you bought the thing I was suggesting in the same minute as I posted the suggestion. I think I should buy a lotto ticket tonight....
