So I went and bought this one..

SMC Networks, 5port 10/100Mbps Dual-Speed Hub,

Of course I read the box and it said nothing about Switches.

I open the manual up and the first page says..

The EZ Hub 10/100 SMC-EZ5805DS is an 5-port Fast ethernet hub. With store and forward switching, maximum data integrity is always maintained.

OMG. @!!

Oh well, time to return this shit and attempt to find the ones listed even if I have to travel a bit further.

Thanks boys,

Why can't they print this shit on the outer box?

Must be a Verant conspiracy

I myself use a very old Intel InBusiness 8-port hub, but right now you can only find those in a museum. Good luck with your search, man.

I went through the same pain recently when my hub died. I picked up a netgear hub (after returning three other brands, CompUSA no like me now) and it is a true hub. I picked up just the little 4 porter but I am guessing/hoping the larger hubs are also true hubs.

Hope this helps.

A dual speed hub is a 10MB and a 100MB hub connected via a 2 port bridge.

As long as your EQ machine and your SEQ machine are connected at the same speed, you shouldn't have any problems.

Been there (http://seq.sourceforge.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1008) done that. (http://seq.sourceforge.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=382)

Yeah. SMC hubs aren't hubs. And searching is your friend. =)

Any netgear products which start with "EN" in the model number will work fine.

Any netgear products that start with "DS" in the model number will work fine if the EQ station and the ShowEQ station are connecting at the same speed. I personally use a DS-108.

That SMC hub should also work assuming that both devices connect at the same speed.

If you want to avoid any chance of hassle, then avoid any product that mentions 10/100. Anything that is 10/100 is either a switch or a Dual Speed Hub. If it mentions Full Duplex, it's a switch.

It doesn't. Both my SEQ box and my EQ box are 100, and it doesn't work.

Even if I connect a 10mbit device to the switch, (I refuse to call it a hub) it doesn't work. (this trick works for linksys switch-hubs)

The EZ Hub 10/100 SMC-EZ5805DS does NOT work for showeq, for a recap.

If the device is using <store and forward>, then it is at least switching some of the traffic.

There are three flavors of hubs

1. A bridged 10/100 hub
This will brodcast all 100MB traffic to all 100MB ports ans all 10mb traffic to all 10mb ports

2. A switched 10/100 hub
This typically has 100MB ports switched and does NOT broadcast all 100MB traffic, but it does broadcast all 10mb traffic to all 10mb ports

3. A 10MB hub, its really cheap, can handle broadband connections and always broadcasts all traffic to every port. The only down side is if you are doing file transfeers between machines, then it will be slow.

You should be able to find a 10MB hub for under $20 on ebay or look in the classifieds for companies having sales. Pick up a couple extra 100MB cards if you want fast transfer fo files betweek machines.

remember a cable modem is typically around 400 KBps, DSL 768KBps, and a T1 is 1.544 Mbps, all of which are much lower than the 10Mbps Hub.

Unless you have a T3 (45MBps) you will only need a 10MB hub. And if you do have a T3, which costs $11,000+ per month, you should already know this.

don't forget:

4.) the mostly retarded switch/hub (by linksys) - when ONLY 10mbit or ONLY 100mbit devices are hooked up, the device is a switch. when at least 1 device of each speed is present, the "hub/switch" is a hub on each plane (100mbit and 10mbit) but a switch between them (reasonable, since you can't flood the 10mbit plane at 100mbit).
