On Borland Builder there is a very nice widget that allows for you to have a panel on the GUI that can be updated via the httpd protocol from somewhere on the internet each time the program is loaded. It could be an optional window that a user could opt. to have pop up every day or only when desired that could contain "news" or "status" information.
I'm not sure if that type of thing is available for qt/X since I am a newbie to linux programming; however, since Borland did that that cross platform compiler recently there might be something close....
