emulating windows on linux

First question I know its off topic, how do i configure linux to use my dual processor setup. Second, I am a complete linux noob, I need some help setting ShowEQ up. I already got RedHat 8.0 installed. I am a gamer not a programmer, My goalts are....
1. To run ShowEQ and EQ on the same machine.
2. Emulate EQ with RedHat 8.0 installed
3. Use one processor to run EQ and one to run redhat, because I have dual setup, so I could set affinity and do that.
Again I am a linux noob, so tell me what I should do.
I am running a dual 2100+ XP processors, on tyan mobo, 512 DDR crucial ram, 120 gig HD partitioned with red hat and windows xp pro.
If I posted this in the wrong forum I'm sorry but figured the help forum was the best place to post it in.

VMware (http://www.vmware.com/) runs operating systems inside of other operating systems.

Winex (http://www.transgaming.com/) will emulate Windows from within Linux and is specifically suited for games. EQ is one they particularly try to keep up with.

You will need a Linux distribution (http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html) to get started. For a newbie, I recommend Red Hat (http://www.redhat.com/), as it's probably the easiest distro to get up and running with. The ShowEQ FAQ (http://www.macsrule.com/~seqfaq/seq-faq.html?s=&menu=9), as well as this thread (http://seq.sourceforge.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3768) should get you up and running in SEQ's current state.

Winex is nifty. I don't do much with it, but a fellow EQer used to play under Linux as his normal OS.

Judging by the screenshot's recent update, they do continue to keep at it.

FAQ on transgaming site says there are some problems with eq running slow on redhat.. may want to consider an alternate distribution if that's still the case.

yeah i already have linux installed (redhat 8) so ill try the few you mentioned VM Ware was always a pain when i tried it. So ill try WINEX, thanks for your suggestions.

Also, depending on your requirements, incstead of running multiple instances of an operating system, consider using MySEQ. MySEQ is simular to showeq, but it runs under windows and attached in memory, istead of network sniffing.

True enough. However, the amount of people running ShowEQ is marginal compared to the number of people running Macroquest. I highly doubt that they would take action against such a large number of customers.

heh, I would imagine there are far more people using ShowEQ than using MacroQuest. It's just that MacroQuest use is much more obvious to the casual observer.

There are more people that use MacroQuest than anyone would ever notice using ShowEQ is probably more true...

I recently upgraded a RedHat box to RedHat 9 and installed WineX 3.1 and it runs EverQuest just fine. Don't get me wrong, there are still a few issues, but it is certainly playable.

The problem I had, oddly enough, was that my laptop running ShowEQ never detected my desktop's EQ session, but when I rebooted my desktop into Windows, ShowEQ detected EQ and worked just fine. I would have figured that ShowEQ just watches the datastream and the OS running EQ would be unimportant. Or maybe there's another problem that I haven't considered....

Hrm.. This is a simple guess, but I'm guessing that libpcap doesn't work correctly when in that environment.

It may have issues with the capture of packets sent from the local machine.. (?)

Sorry, I may have been a bit vague. I've got a laptop running RedHat that I use for ShowEQ and a desktop that dual-boots RedHat and Windows where I actually run EverQuest.
