Performance / Zoning time

Hi,

Just installed SEQ on RedHat 9 box on my old Pentium III 667mhz with 512megs on RAM.

Zoning time of SEQ is really long I was wondering if it's normal. Didnt time it with a watch, but for example on my main computer(amd xp 2400+, 1gig ram) I can zone from Twilight to Scarlet Desert and run to Grey entrance and zone to Gray before SEQ even loads Scarlet Desert. :P

Is this normal ? (ok the oldie comp aint a gighertz comp, but it still runs EQ in W2k Pro very well)


Oldie comp has GeForce2 MX 32meg vid card, Intel Pro100 Ethernet card, some VIA ApolloPro133A Chipset or something.

I run it just fine on an Athlon 650 with less ram than you have and some crappy onboard video card. I'm not using RH though - using Mandrake 8.1 (think that's the version).

I also find it runs faster for me using Gnome instead of KDE.

Forgot to specify that I use Gnome on RH9. Or thats what I selected on Installation, I didnt install KDE at all.


Any ideas how to make it work faster?

Run it with the itemdb disabled.

$ showeq --itemdb-disable

That does seem slow, although I don't have any suggestions on how to fix it. Often I find skittles about concurrent with resuming control in the zone I just moved into.

I get this from time to time as well depending on the version.

PC I am using it on:

AMD Thunderbird 1.2GHz
1GB PC2100 DDR
GeForce4 Ti4400
WD 30GB UDMA100 7200RPM

No clue why it happens. It happened with 4.3.18 til we had that last opcode update patch that someone made and then it loaded instantly like it normally would.

But now with the 4.3.19 CVS I am observing it each time I zone. No worries about it, as long as it works. Just thought I would post my experience with this problem as well.

Using the --itemdb-disable helps me quite a bit.

I have a dual p3 500 with 750mb memory and it is slow as dog shit unless I use the --itemdb-disable. FYI, Im using RH 7.2 and kde.

You are right, that does work wonders BA, however, the only thing that makes me scratch my head is why some versions do it and others don't. I mean, my hardware and software don't change.

I guess it will just go on as an unsolved mystery! I thank you for your efforts that you have put in over the years, it is not unappreciated.

I figure if this is the worst of my troubles with the sofware, then I have it good! :)

Heh, actually your software does change (different versions of SEQ). Personally I've never used the itemdb that SEQ creates (though it might be useful for things like +mana and +hp items for character stats in SEQ).

I believe it was turned off as default for a version or 2 and then it was turned back on by default.
