Everyone has a prefered flavor of linux, but its doesn't matter which version you compile in. As long as you have all the required apps/packages installed you should be able to compile it without too much trouble. I think there are still people who maintain freebsd and solaris versions of the libs needed to de-encrypt eq data too.
