I don't have access to reply to the announcement post thread about spam. But what I've done in the past and currently on my phpBB site is to put new users into a new users group that requires their first 5 posts to be moderated/approved, before others can see them. Then a couple times per year, I go in and purge all of the user accounts that have 0 posts. Seems to work well.

There arent too many spammers. It seems only real people are getting through. If we put 5 posts, people would get validated in about 5 years! Lol.
